Bond Updates

In July 2003, the newly formed Zachary Community School System officially took control of the existing school facilities to be utilized for teaching the children of the community. The school system was immediately faced with questions regarding the ability to accommodate the present overcrowding as well as the anticipated future growth: What additional facilities are needed at each school? What condition are our facilities in now? What new schools are needed? How long will it take to implement? In anticipation of these concerns, the School Board formulated a Building and Facilities Committee in January 2003 made up of citizens from the community.

In March 2004, voters approved a $39 million bond issue to fund the construction of a new elementary school at Copper Mill Elementary, Renovations and Additions at Zachary Elementary School, Renovations and Additions at Northwestern Elementary, to Replace Northwestern Middle School on site, Renovations and Additions at Zachary High School and the Highest Priority Improvements from the facility condition analysis.

In 2006, voters approve a second bond issue to fund several projects including a Performing Arts Auditorium, Competition Gymnasium, ZHS Athletic Field House, and Agriculture Center at Zachary High, Northwestern Elementary Kitchen Additions and renovations after Hurricane Katrina caused an unexpected rise in constructon costs. Second bond issue goals also included several new items including ZHS Field and Track Resurfacing a 1000 Seat Addition to the Zachary High gymnasium and the renovation of the Northwestern Middle School Auditorium.

A third bond issue of $25 million was approved by voters in March of 2008 to fund a classroom addition at Copper Mill Elementary and the construction of a 24 classroom 9th Grade Academy at Zachary High School.
