With a focus on workable solutions for school districts, the conference featured current national topics affecting local education leaders, including school district implementation of the stimulus package. The conference also served as the host of one of the largest expositions of education products and services in the country.

Founded in 1940, the National School Boards Association www.nsba.org is a not-for-profit organization representing state associations of school boards and their 95,000 local school board members throughout the United States. Its mission is to work with and through all its State Association members to foster excellence and equity in public education through school board leadership. NSBA achieves that mission by representing the school board perspective in working with federal government agencies and national organizations that impact education, and provides vital information and services to state associations of school boards throughout the nation.

Zachary Elementary Students Participate in LSU Coastal Roots Planting Project

Students at Zachary Elementary recently planted bitter panicum nodes and cypress tree seeds as part of the LSU Coastal Roots program. Students also installed a nursery where they will nurture and maintain the seedlings until the fall planting season. Throughout the year, the students will learn about coastal erosion issues throughout Louisiana, while overseeing the entire growth cycle of the plants. Next fall, the students will take the seedlings to Grand Isle, where they will have the opportunity to actually plant the grasses on the beaches of the eroding barrier island. LSU Coastal Roots establishes school-based nurseries at schools within the coastal zone of Louisiana. These nurseries are student managed and are capable of producing native wetland plants for use in habitat restoration. Each school is partnered with a long term restoration site, which they are able to revisit each year for planting trips. There are currently over 40 schools in eighteen parishes participating in the program. Since 2000, 3,573 students have planted more than 29,000 student-produced seedlings in Louisiana. Students from grades 3-12 across 18 parishes of south Louisiana are taking part in this project by establishing wetland plant nurseries at their schools. Students are growing native plant seedlings that they will plant in a coastal habitat restoration project in south Louisiana.

Students are working with a variety of seeds, including the water oak, southern baldcypress, southern wax myrtle, black mangrove, red mulberry, and Spartina alterniflora grass - just to name a few.

ZHS Career Day set for April 23

More than 75 area professionals will be on hand at Zachary High Friday, April 23 to participate in the school's annual Career Day. Lisa Redmon is one of 200 highly-qualified third- through fifth-grade teachers from around the country selected to attend the intensive one-week, all-expense paid professional development program this summer.

Redmon teaches fifth grade while Deliberto teaches second and third grade students.

A panel of educators from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) selected Lisa Redmon to attend the Academy. The panel based their decision on her qualifications, dedication to inspiring students at an early age and her overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.

During the Academy, scheduled for July 18 – 23, teachers will discover new ways to excite students using experiments that demonstrate various math and science concepts including force, gravity and probability. The Academy curriculum works to deepen teachers’ understanding of these principles by conducting hands-on experiments that teachers can share with their students in the classroom.

"Lisa Redmon is an excellent teacher. She was also honored as the Teacher of The Year at Copper Mill Elementary, and is the recipient of Muriel Green Award," according to Principal Dewey Davis. This award is given to one teacher nationally and recognizes young science teachers with a passion for teaching and inspiring science in students.

District officials are proud to have two teachers selected to participate in this wonderful opportunity.

Through www.sendmyteacher.com, teachers from all 50 states had the opportunity to apply for this development opportunity with more than 1,200 teachers applying for the 2010 Academy. Parents and teachers also nominated their teacher to apply for the opportunity by sending an e-card or printing a teacher appreciation certificate from the site. The application process for the 2011 Academy is now open on www.sendmyteacher.com.

ExxonMobil partnered with Phil and Amy Mickelson, and developed in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions to found the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in 2005. To date, more than 2,000 teachers have attended the Academy, impacting more than 30,000 students from across the country with the lessons and skills they learned.

To nominate local teachers for the 2011 Academy, please visit www.sendmyteacher.com.

FMA Live! Comes to Northwestern Middle

FMA Live will host 2 performances at Northwestern Middle School Tuesday, March 22 at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.

This innovative, traveling hip-hop science concert will reach more than 17,000 middle-school aged students during its 10-week, 20 city tour of the United States. Named for Sir Isaac Newtons's second law of motion (force = mass x acceleration) FMA Live! uses professional actors, original songs, music videos and interactive science demonstrations to teach middle school students Newton's three laws of motion and universal law of gravity.

Created in 2004, FMA Live! is a collaboration between NASA and Honeywell International of Morristown, N.J. It is the only nationally touring, multi-media, science-education production of its kind.

During each FMA Live! performance, students, teachers and school administrators interact with three professional actors in front of a live audience to experience Newton's laws firsthand. A giant sticky wall is used to demonstrate inertia; go-carts driven across the stage illustrate action and reaction; and "extreme" wrestling and a huge soccer ball show that force is determined by mass multiplied by acceleration.

All three of Newton's laws are demonstrated simultaneously when a futuristic hover chair collides with a gigantic cream pie

For more information about the program visit: http://www.fmalive.com

ZHS to Celebrate Final Game in Gym

Come and join former players and Zachary High supporters on Wednesday, February 17 as the basketball team plays the final regular season game in the existing ZHS gymnasium. They were buried for hundreds of years before being discovered by well diggers in 1974 in Xi’ai Shaanxi Provence China.

Northwestern Middle School Talented Arts students, along with Tammy Wood, Margret Atkinson and Talented Arts Teacher Shawn Quincy Foreman traveled to Houston to see the Terra Cotta Warriors from China.

Foreman describes the exhibition as “amazing; just being in the presence of the works of art was truly a once in a lifetime experience. The students had a wealth of information passed on to them by the docents; they were shown how the warriors were constructed as well as the reasoned for them being built,” he explained.

Upon returning their first assignment this year was to construct a three dimensional Asian type warrior figure with armor. The purpose of the trip was to get an idea of how a figure could be constructed three dimensionally and what Asian motifs may have been like during the Qin dynasty. The students worked long and hard on constructing these new warriors. They used a construction technique called tape casting. This is where they covered a body part with plastic wrap, and then taped over it in several layers. They then cut it off and reassembled the pieces into a figure and painted it.

The Talented Art students jumped in with both feet and produced some amazing pieces of work. The New Warriors will be on display at the Northwestern Middle School library until the Christmas Break.

CC Lockwood to Join Zachary Elementary Students in Celebrating The Wetlands

The Zachary Community is invited to join Zachary Elementary School students in Celebrating Louisiana's Wetlands Thursday, December 10 at 6 p.m. After studying the different ecosystems all over the world and creating the inflatable ecosystems last year, students in Kristy Gilpin and Breigh Rainey's classes have turned their attention to the ecosystems of Louisiana. This year, they have focused on the importance of the wetlands and gone on several research trips with the students. Students had the opportunity to Honey Island Swamp, where they learned photography tips from CC Lockwood, went to LUMCON (The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium) in Cocodrie, LA to study the marsh and visited a scale model of the Mississippi River at LSU. On all of these trips, students took their own photos and interacted with experts in the field to create their own nonfiction books related to the Louisiana wetlands.

Students will debut their books at the December 10 celebration. Guests will have the opportunity to learn from CC Lockwood who will speak about his book Marsh Mission, participate in an auction of artwork created by Zachary Elementary third grade students, and enjoy musical and dramatic selections. All of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the Zachary Elementary Library and several organizations working to save the Louisiana wetlands.

Northwestern Middle Drama Department Presents Flapper!

Flapper!

Flapper, a madcap musical comedy tribute to the 1920's, will be performed by 8th grade advanced drama students of Northwestern Middle with appearances by 7th grade dance class students and the NMS dazzler dance team.
Two night performances to be held in the NMS auditorium that are open to the public
Performances will be held Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students/children and are available for purchase at the door.

State Superintendent Visits Zachary Schools

State Superintendent Paul Pastorek toured Zachary Community Schools for the first time Tuesday. Pastorek said he was impressed with much of what he saw including the technology, teaming and program opportunities provided to students.

Pastorek was greeted upon arrival by principals of the district’s 6 schools, community leaders and members of the Zachary Community School Board. He then joined a group of around 50 students in the Northwestern Middle School library; where he spoke briefly and listened to the students discuss future plans and aspirations.

“You’re in the best school, in the best district in the state,” Pastorek told the students.
After visiting with the students, Pastorek observed a group of sixth grade teachers during their teaming time. During the professional learning communities, the teachers meet daily to discuss curriculum, the needs of their shared students and collaborate on lesson plans.

Principal Debby Brian admitted it’s a scheduling challenge to have all of the teachers in a group free at the same to time get together but said it’s important for the success of the students and that while challenging for administrators, the district has provided her with the resources to make this schedule possible.

Pastorek then had a chance to see Northwestern Middle Teacher Michelle Powell in action with some of her students. Her captivating lesson, evidence of the great teaching and learning taking place in Zachary schools.

From Northwestern Middle, the tour moved to Northwestern Elementary where they observed the more than 900 Prek through 1st grade students housed there.
Pastorek said he was impressed with the technology he saw in place with even the district’s youngest students. Zachary Superintendent Warren Drake also highlighted the fact that the district offers foreign language, art and music to students beginning on the Prek level.

The final stop on the trip was Zachary High where Superintendent Pastorek met with a group of student leaders who joined him for lunch after he toured the agriscience program, welding and woodworking shop, athletic facilities and Hard Work Cafè. Pastorek answered student questions and enjoyed lunch in the Zachary High cafeteria before heading to his next appointment.

District officials said they were excited about Pastorek’s first visit to the state’s number one school district and happy to show him some of the great things going on in Zachary schools.

District to Show President's Address, Parents Can Opt Out

Dear Parents,
President Barack Obama plans to address the school children of America on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. That’s what students in Zachary schools were doing this semester as they began Drink It Then Sink It, the district-wide plastic recycling program. Students recycle plastic in the form of milk bottles and other approved drink containers, including water bottles. They are the first district in the state to recycle the plastic bottles.

This school year Zachary School District switched from serving milk in paper cartons which are not recycled to recyclable, kid-friendly 8 ounce plastic bottles. “Our students love the plastic bottles and as a result, they are drinking more milk,” said Kathy Valentine, Child Nutrition Supervisor..

Recycling plastic milk bottles at school benefits schools and the community. It teaches students to be environmentally responsible, it significantly decreases trash and diverts it from the landfill, and it saves natural resources as recycled bottles are made into new products.

The recycling project was planned and implemented by a partnership including Zachary School Nutrition Program, Recycling Foundation and Southeast Dairy Association,

Zachary High Hosts Career Day

Zachary High School will host their annual Career Day Friday, April 24. Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE) is a $27 million, 70,000-square-foot facility located at the Research Park of the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

The event will culminate with a capstone stakeholder conference for leaders in business and government on April 17-18. The conference will include panel discussions with industry insiders and presentations on the digital technologies and creative processes initiative, which is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Department of Economic Development.

Of the 40 students participating in this unique experience 12 are students at Northwestern Middle or Zachary High School. The students are using Metaplace platform to create games that address real Louisiana problems. They have committed to long hours and extra research and have been engaged by this unique project.

After they had an in-service about the platform Metaplace, they began to build their virtual worlds. The students are working to solve one of Louisiana's four core problems: health care, education, brain drain, and coastal erosion. The students broke into groups, and the team leaders, presented their issue, possible solutions, and the game genre they planned on using.

According to Teacher Margret Atkinson, the students are learning skills other than virtual world building. “Working on a team, they have to communicate with each other. I teach most of the students, and I have been interested to hear how they would communicate with each other outside of a classroom setting. The students certainly felt some creative tension early in the process, but they have completely worked it out, through their own means and under the guidance of the lab leader.

The students are learning how to organize their thoughts and research the relevant points to support their arguments. The students are also learning how to manage time and pace themselves, as they have daily tasks they have to complete.”

The students' presentation of their work from the Digital Workforce Intensive to industry experts will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday.
