Target Audience

While all students will be considered on a case-by-case need, the students selected for the program will need to possess the following:
•A desire to learn independently
•Self-motivation
•Good time management skills
•A preference for anytime/anywhere learning versus the traditional classroom
•A propensity for completing assignments at an expedited pace
•Computer literacy (able to perform basic tasks on a computer or mobile device)

If course progress is not completed in a timely manner or guidelines and/or policies set forth by the Zachary Community School District are violated, students may be removed from the program at the discretion of the school district.

Guidelines
& Expectations

ZVLP is a learning environment tailored to fit the needs of an individual student. The lessons may include lectures, online content, homework practice, lab activities, and online quizzes and tests. The advantage is that students work at their own pace using the internet and various online learning activities. Since this is a program run by the Zachary Community School District, there are certain guidelines and expectations required of the participants.

Enrollment Option

| Full-time Virtual

Students may have the opportunity to complete most Carnegie unit courses online through online courses and virtual learning platforms that meet required academic standards.
Students are required to carry a full course load as outlined within their graduation pathway. All course and attendance requirements will be met as outlined within Bulletin 741. Exceptions must be approved by the  Superintendent with recommendation from the school’s principal.

ZVLP is an alternative to traditional public school, where students access standards-based courses facilitated by highly qualified/certified instructors through an online format. Courses can be completed through a varied pace curriculum that is solely aligned to the ability of an individual student. The courses can be completed anytime/anywhere and are progress monitored through a series of benchmark tests as well as a culminating exam that  proves mastery of the content. All courses enable the student to be in direct contact with their facilitator through email, phone, and/or face-to-face interaction.
Upon completion, a student can earn a Zachary High School diploma.

Enrollment Criteria

Students desiring to participate in ZVLP must complete the application process from the Zachary Community School District. The application must include proof of residency, as well as all pertinent student records from the previous school attended (if applicable). The student will become an attendee of ZHS once registered and will be an integral part of the Zachary Community School District. A face-to-face orientation is mandatory for assignment to ZVLP.

Attendance Requirements

ZVLP will follow all policies as set forth by Bulletin 741(§2395) regarding attendance. Students are expected to be active participants on a weekly basis for a minimum of 20 hours and complete a total of 75 assignments per week. Students can work at their own pace anytime/anywhere, however, attendance is only logged when the student is actively participating in an online course.

Extracurricular Activities & Athletics Teams

ZVLP students enrolled at Zachary High School will have the opportunity to participate in any activity offered at that site. All rules and regulations governing extracurricular activities must be met in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures (unless district policy forbids participation).

Dual Enrollment

Students enrolled within ZVLP may take DE classes when the entrance criteria are met. Dual enrollment is the simultaneous enrollment of a student in both high school and college in which the student receives credit on both their high school and college transcripts for the same course. Students may enroll in college courses at local technical, community, and/or four-year colleges. Students enrolled in a college course follow the college  curriculum. The course is taught by either the college instructor or a high school instructor who is approved to teach the college course. With dual enrollment, students may begin accumulating college credits while still in high school, thus providing a smoother transition to college after high school graduation. Students also have the opportunity to complete college faster by earning college credits while still in high school. Students must meet the admissions standards of the college awarding the credit. Admissions standards vary between technical colleges, community colleges, and four-year universities. Contact the individual institution and/or a professional  school counselor to discuss admissions standards and other details regarding dual enrollment.

Progress reports and status reports will be available to parents through an online website. Students will receive a progress report that illustrates their progress toward course completion. If  needed or requested, parents and/or guardians will be sent weekly emails of their student ’s progress as well as parental access at any time to their child’s course progress. Additional tracking of progress will be conducted by the assigned ZVLP facilitator.
